Charles Dickens Summary
Below is a passage from the Holy Bible and another passage written by Charles Dickens that was used to follow up the Bible scripture in my morning devotional book. As I read from this book, A Treasure of Wisdom: a Daily Devotional Journal, the short section by Mr. Dickens struck me as nearly a complete summary of the entire Bible, especially Jesus' teachings. It reflects a lot of Jesus' Beatitudes, which sums up how we should treat others so we will have peace. I would like to mention that Mr. Dickens is only one of several quoted authors in this book. And many of them are quoted via book excerpts more than once throughout the book.😊
So, I wanted to share this devotion with you today. Jesus, who is God, of course, is quoted in Matthew 5:16. He was saying that our good works should be seen to glorify God - to show how good God is, not how good we are. And I broke down each sentence from Charles Dickens into a new paragraph so you could feel the impact as I did when I read this, this morning.
Jesus said, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father, which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16.
Charles Dickens wrote:
Remember! - It is Christianity to do good always, even to those who do evil to us.
It is Christianity to love our neighbor as ourself, and to do to all men, as we would have them do to us.
It is Christianity to be gentle, merciful and forgiving, and keep those qualities quiet in our hearts, and never make a boast of them or of our prayers, or of our love of God, but always to show that we love Him by humbly trying to do right in everything.
If we do this and remember the life and lessons of our Lord Jesus Christ and try to act up to them, we may confidently hope that God will forgive us our sins and mistakes and enable us to live and die in peace.
A fun story about this book
Many of you know that I enjoy frequent visits to my local Goodwill store. Some days are a bust, but other days, I might find a cute shirt or a good book. My son looks for vintage collectibles to sell on Etsy, music CDs, and movie DVDs. I actually found this devotional on one of my visits to the Goodwill store.
A Treasure of Wisdom was given to the original owner on November 8, 1997. I bought it in 2024. The original owner never wrote in it. So, it now has my ramblings and highlights in it. I assume the original owner had read it at least once, because the binding broke early this year after I had opened and closed the book several times for my daily studies. I simply taped the binding back on. As one Amazon reviewer said, "It isn't what the outside of the book looks like; it's the information inside the book that's important." Anyway, I like to write thoughts and highlight sections, because I imagine my sons looking at these books after I die, and maybe it will bring them some warmth and comfort as they see what I thought was interesting or important.
If you're interested in the devotional, it is actually available for sale on Amazon and other online stores. I have provided the Amazon link in the first paragraph of this blog post. I get no profits from any sales on links that I provide; I just like to share good information.
I would also like to encourage you to visit your local Goodwill. They provide jobs and education to their employees and awesome deals if you happen to find something you like. Just as important, though, the donations are priced so they are affordable for those who can't afford the prices of today's economy. They have a donation center only blocks from my house too so I can conveniently donate to them as well. They also sell video DVDs, music CDs, books, and video games on eBay.
Have a blessed day,
Patricia
